Of Pink Elephants and Midnight Visitors
The sensation of something pulling on his shirt yanked Daniel out of his peaceful slumber and, bleary-eyed, he turned to see his 4-year old daughter standing by his bedside, clutching a worn pillow that was half her size to her chest. Her dark brown eyes, so large in the darkness of his bedroom, were filled with scared tears.
Instantly, Daniel was awake. "Katie, what's wrong?" he asked, his tone gentle as he pushed himself into a sitting position, picking up his daughter and cradling her in his arms.
"Daddy, there's no such thing as pink elephants, are there?" Katie asked, her voice small with fear.
Daniel hugged her close to him. "Oh, sweetie, of course there's no such thing. Why?"
Katie sniffled, snuggling close to her dad. "I had a scary dream," she whispered.
"Shh, it's ok," Daniel breathed, pressing a kiss to the top of her head, "Do you want to tell me what it was about?"
"There...there were these pink elephants and they were big and they were scary and they squished you and Mommy!" Katie suddenly buried her face in Daniel's chest as she cried.
Daniel held onto Katie tight, wishing Janet were there to help; Katie needed all the reassurance from her parents that she could get. "It's ok, my little munchkin," Daniel soothed, rubbing her back gently, "Mommy and I aren't going anywhere."
Katie looked up at him and hiccupped, her tears calming to a slow trickle down her cheeks. "Never ever?"
"Never ever ever," Daniel whispered. After several moments of silence, Daniel knew Katie had calmed down significantly, but from the way she clung to him, she wasn't going to want to sleep alone. "Do you want to stay with me tonight?"
Katie said nothing, but nodded. Daniel crawled back under the covers, tucking in his daughter beside him. She cuddled up next to him, unwilling to let go of his shirt or her pillow as she slowly fell back asleep.
Daniel watched as his daughter drifted off to sleep, unable to keep the smile off his face as he looked at his daughter. Daniel never thought he would have children after the death of Sha're, never thought that he would be able to fall in love with anyone again. But, one day, he realized that he had slowly been falling in love with someone for years and, miraculously, she loved him back.
It didn't take Daniel and Janet long to get married after they revealed their feelings for one another. Given the nature of their jobs at the time, neither of them wanted regrets.
Barely a year after their marriage, Katie was born. Daniel had never realized how much love his heart could hold, but the second he laid eyes on his daughter, he thought his heart would burst.
Things had changed over the years. Not wanting his daughter to grow up without a father, Daniel had started going on fewer and fewer off-world missions before he nearly stopped altogether, acting primarily as a consultant.
Part of Daniel regretted giving up the excitement of traveling through the Stargate on a weekly basis, but when he came home everyday the sight of his smiling daughter, eager to show her daddy everything she had done at school that day, Daniel knew he wouldn't want to miss it for the world.
Inevitably, sleep caught back up with Daniel and it didn't take him long to join his daughter in slumber.
Daniel hummed to himself as he did the remaining dishes that wouldn't fit in the dishwasher. The house was surprisingly silent. Since Cassie had moved out, the noise had gone down dramatically. But, the reason for the near silence in the house that afternoon was that Katie had gone down for her nap only 20 minutes before and would be asleep for at least the next two hours.
"Now, this is a sight I would have paid to see."
Daniel nearly dropped the glass in his hands and spun around to see his wife standing in the kitchen doorway. "Janet!" he exclaimed, setting the glass down in the sink and striding over to her. He wrapped his arms around her, unmindful of his wet, soapy hands, and kissed her long and hard.
"You're hands are wet," Janet said several moments later after they had pulled away.
"Well, I was doing the dishes," Daniel pointed out with a grin, "So how was the conference?" Daniel kept his arms wrapped around her, wet hands and all, as she relayed to him the more interesting details of her trip. He was loathe to let her go; it had been a week since he had last seen her.
"I really wish I had stayed here instead, though," Janet murmured, nuzzling Daniel's neck.
"Mmm, I missed you, too," Daniel said, kissing the top of her head.
"How was everything on the home front?" Janet asked as she pulled away from Daniel's arms and went over to turn off the still running water.
"Mostly fine," Daniel said, "Katie had a nightmare last night and spent the rest of the night in our bed."
"Is she ok?" Janet asked, a concerned look on her face.
"I think she's ok," Daniel said, pulling his wife into his arms again, "But you might want to spend a little time with her tonight, just so she knows you're ok." Daniel told Janet of the dream Katie had and Janet couldn't help but frown, starting to move away to go to her daughter.
"But not now," Daniel said, "I just put her down for her nap. And you know how she sleeps like a log..." Daniel leaned over and pressed several small, but suggestive kisses on Janet's neck.
"Why, Doctor Jackson, if I didn't know any better, I would say you were trying to seduce me," Janet giggled.
Daniel grinned. "I don't need to try," he said, his voice low and husky, "You know you want me." Janet gasped and opened her mouth to protest, but was cut off by Daniel's lips pressed against hers, kissing her so thoroughly that she nearly forgot her own name.
When they finally pulled apart, Janet struggled to catch her breath. "Ok, I want you." Daniel merely grinned triumphantly and pulled his wife up to the bedroom, ready to surrender himself to the arms of his loving wife.
